LexCentral Steel Updates Cut-to-Length Slitting Line

LexCentral Steel Corporation has made significant upgrades to its cut-to-length slitting line after discovering a problem during routine maintenance  in late May which, forced the machine to undergo major repairs.

LexCentral Plant Manager Dennis Conrad worked with corporation figureheads to create an alternative to simply repairing the cut-to-length slitting line. During the three months of downtime LexCentral has improved shape control and upgraded the leveler.60" Slitting Line

The cut-to-length line at the Bedford Park-based facility is now able to more accurately and efficiently produce top-notch sheets without minor imperfections

“It’s not an ideal situation—having the cut-to-length line out of service for a few months— but it did provide us with an opportunity to upgrade the machine in order to provide superior quality to our customers,” LexCentral President Bill Douglass said.

Upgrading the cut-to-length line has added to LexCentral’s capabilities, which include everything from slitting, leveling, blanking and pickling to warehousing and toll processing.

While the cut-to-length machine was down the sales and purchasing teams worked with several outside processors in order to ensure on-time delivery and the same superior quality provided by LexCentral’s in-house slitters.

“I think our sales and purchasing teams did an excellent job coordinating orders with quite a few outside processors while ensuring in-house orders were not abandoned,” Douglass said. “It’s not often you have a machine go down and it turns out you’ve developed new relationships with outside processors and improved your machinery.”
